#463 Incumbents Win 100% of the time until they don't

"Incumbency advantage is steep, but it's only undefeated until voters decide they've had enough of passive governance."

The Incumbent, King will win and Rideau Rockcliffe and Ottawa will lose.

That is the most likely outcome based on the public record so far. Incumbency advantage is steep, but it's only undefeated until voters decide they've had enough of passive governance.

In 2022 King took 80% of the vote (8,491 votes) against three opponents; I finished third with 6.8% (716 votes).

King first won the seat in a crowded 2019 by-election and has now been the only councillor most residents have known for seven years.

Municipal races in Ottawa usually see turnout around 40%, and incumbents who stay visible at community events, keep a functioning constituency office, and avoid major personal scandal almost always hold their seats.

This year’s race is a two-person contest, which theoretically lets every anti-incumbent vote land on one challenger, me.

Even so, nothing in the available coverage or campaign activity indicates a large, organized shift.

Media treatment of Ward 13 has been perfunctory—“King seeking a third term, same challenger as last time”—and there are no public ward-level polls.

King’s advantages remain the usual ones: name recognition, existing relationships across Overbrook, New Edinburgh, Manor Park and Rockcliffe, and the simple fact that most voters do not follow 400-plus blog posts about 311 tickets and CSO volumes. Tracking 311 response delays and sewer overflow volumes isn't just about data; it's about making sure your basement doesn't flood and your streets get repaired on time.

A wide-margin win is therefore the default expectation.

It is not a certainty—low-turnout races can move if a specific local issue (flooding, LRT reliability, the east-end crossing) suddenly dominates conversation in September and October—but the historical and structural evidence points strongly in King’s direction.

Fine. At least I have given voters a real choice. I will get more votes and people will have expressed their disapproval of the incumbent's pandering and ineffective ways

That is enough for me.

But, maybe there will be another once in 200 year event though? A flood that causes a change in the current tide?

Regardless of the odds, voters deserve a real choice and a clear alternative to passive representation.

 apologies for the sound quality

Vote differently, vote wisely vote for Peter Karwacki for Rideau-Rockcliffe.
