Smaller-scale but wonderful gatherings — music, face painting, sports, and neighbourly connection. Keep an eye on the Crichton Community Council calendar for exact dates. These events are the lifeblood of our ward. They boost local businesses, strengthen community bonds, and showcase why Rideau-Rockcliffe is one of Ottawa’s most livable and welcoming places. But we must get serious about noise control.I’ve heard from many of you — especially residents living near Beechwood Avenue, the parks, and Rideau Hall — that late-night music, amplified sound, and street parties can spill into quiet residential streets long after families want to sleep. Noise travels far in our leafy neighbourhoods, and it affects young children, shift workers, seniors, and anyone who values peace in their own home. The City of Ottawa already has noise bylaws, but enforcement is often reactive and inconsistent. Festival organizers receive exemptions, yet the impact on nearby homes is real. We can — and must — do better without killing the fun.As your advocate for Rideau-Rockcliffe, I am calling on the City to take these practical steps this summer and beyond:Stronger, real-time enforcement of sound limits at all ward events.
Require professional sound monitoring and automatic limiters for amplified music.
Invest in noise barriers — temporary acoustic fencing or permanent low-impact barriers along key festival corridors (especially Beechwood Avenue during BeechFest and around major park venues).

These are proven, cost-effective solutions used successfully in other cities. They protect residents while letting the party continue. Better advance notice and direct communication with immediate neighbours when exemptions are granted.
We can have lively festivals and respect the people who live here year-round.

Rideau-Rockcliffe has always balanced vibrant community life with respect for our historic neighbourhoods and green spaces. Let’s keep that balance.
If you’re attending any of these events, I hope to see you there — say hello!

And if noise from festivals is affecting your home, please reach out to me directly at peterkarwacki.overbrook@gmail.com or through a blog commentary.
Your feedback shapes the priorities I’ll fight for at City Hall.Let’s make this the best summer yet — full of music, laughter, and the quieter nights we all deserve.
