Some people wonder what it might be like to be invisible!
As a would be politican, I already know.
I am invisible, but I want to be seen.
The band asked how people discovered the concert. No big secret, they just walked around.
I just attended a free jazz concert at McKay United Church. It was packed with people who themselves had just heard about it by walking around and seeing the church bulletin sandwich board.
Naturally, I handed out some political calling cards.
What else is happening around Rideau Rockcliffe just like that?
Churches with free music programming:
Rideau Park United Church offers concerts and a wide variety of programs including music ministries such as choirs, bells and chimes, and drumming groups. They host special choral concerts in the fall, Christmas and spring, with an adult choir that performs during Sunday services. Like McKay, posting about these tends to be through church bulletins and local signage.
Free classical concert series:
Ottawa's historic churches host free church concert series featuring organ recitals, classical music, and choral performances at venues like St. Andrew's Church and Dominion-Chalmers Centre, typically supported by freewill offerings. St. Andrew's serves a made-from-scratch soup lunch after each performance, and all are welcome.
Community resource hubs:
The Rideau-Rockcliffe Community Resource Centre (at 125 MacKay Street) often coordinates local programs and events. While I found references to their work in poverty reduction and community support, checking their Facebook page or stopping by in person would show what's currently happening—music events, workshops, and market activities.
Library programs:
Rockcliffe Park Branch library hosts various drop-in activities and community programs throughout the week.
Discovery strategy:
Like I found the jazz concert, the best way to stay in the loop is to:
- Walk around and check church bulletin boards (especially on Saturdays when people are out)
- Follow local community pages and the Rideau-Rockcliffe Community Resource Centre's social media
- Stop by the Rockcliffe Park library branch for community bulletin boards
- Ask neighbors what they've discovered recently
The intimate, word-of-mouth nature of these events means they often don't get heavy promotion online—which is part of their charm.
It's also why standard door to door politicking is often fruitless.
These were my people.

My voters do not need a sign to vote for me. They go to the elections Ottawa web page, search the drop down list of candidates, find the one for Rideau Rockcliffe and click one of my fascinating links under my profile.
